RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am a political scientist with research interests in the areas of democracy and civil society, social movements, middle class politics, diaspora politics, popular consensus formation, and urban transformations and the remaking of city spaces, in the context of Gujarat and India at large. I am especially fascinated by the contradictions within and vulnerabilities of liberal democracy and the complicity of democratic and civic spaces in the production of exclusionary politics. More recently, I have become interested in exploring the various intellectual and other sources that shape the political views, aspirations and ideological predilections of young people in aspirational urban India. I am also interested in the use of qualitative, especially interpretive and ethnographic research methods, in the social sciences.
